Bathroom Update- 9/26/12

Getting down to the wire!  
We made lots of progress this past weekend:

• installed the shower curtain rod 
• installed both sets of lights, including the fan (with the help of our very kind neighbor!)

I love that you can't really tell the fixture is a fan!

These used to point down,
but I wanted more room for the mirror.
It should look more balanced this way!

• painted the door

• fixed the window sill (a chunk of wood was missing from where the old vanity cut in front of it)

• purchased & installed plantation shutters to the window- thrilled that these were on clearance for $17!

• purchased the mirror & brought the vanity into the room.  

The vanity is going to be the tricky party- new holes needed to be drilled in the floor & in the vanity base to run the pipes.  
We're working on that this week...  

Here's the updated To Do list:

By July 15th:
Purchase wainscoting, drywall & wall board Complete!

Run electric from basement to attic (prep for finishing attic rooms) Complete!

Purchase Mirror- Complete!  
Install vanity- Started!
Install sink fixtures
Install toilet
Install light fixtures- Complete!   
Purchase & Install face plates (Lowe's didn't have the ones we wanted in stock- BOO!)

By October 1st:
Finishing touches & decorating in bathroom

By October 8th: 
(giving ourselves an extra week on this part!  Too much other stuff going on during the next few weekends!)
Install drywall to foyer ceiling & walls

Lighting up the Barn

With the barn doors painted, the horse barn is looking pretty good.

There was still one thing bothering us... the light outside the tack room door.  We liked the fixture itself, but it hung at a funky angle (sort of dangling) & was a rusty brown color.

Last weekend, we decided to remedy that.

Mike disconnected the light, and handed it off to me for taping & painting.  We decided on black to match the hardware on the big barn doors.

Then we had to address the dangling issue in order to re-hang it.  The screws holding it were too long, so the fixture couldn't get snug against the wall.


To fix that, Mike cut a hole in a  rectangular piece of board, then painted it black to match the light fixture.

Now the light is nice & sturdy up there.

Bathroom painted

The painting is just about complete- thank goodness, I thought it would never end!

We primed and then ended up with three coats of the gray AND the white.  I wasn't expecting it to take so many coats, but am happy we did it now rather than realizing it needed it later!

There are still a few spots that I need to touch up on the wainscoting.  I hope to complete that tonight.

Sink/vanity goes here

We brought the new sink & vanity up from the basement, where we were storing it.  

We want to get the lighting in before we put the sink in though, so it's easier to get in there with the ladder.

I found some pivot mirrors that I like in Restoration Hardware... hoping I can find a cheaper version somewhere!

I know I need to update the to do list, but am avoiding it since I know we're still behind schedule!  Ha!

Ah well!

Bathroom Prime(r) Time

We're working away each night this week, to catch up with our project timeline!

Tuesday morning photo

Monday night I primed the wainscoting, while Mike took care of the kiddos.

Then Tuesday night we switched...
Mike primed the upper walls & ceiling, while I did the evening routine with the kids.

After Mike was done, I prepped (taped off the floor) to get ready to paint the wainscoting tonight.  -->

<-- I don't think I had taken a pic looking back at the door, so did that this morning.

Luckily the door is in very good shape (not the case in the master bathroom- where is where the previous owners put their dog, evidenced by claw gouges in the door.  Hoping we can sand that out when we get to working on that bathroom!)

I'm thinking about spraying the towel bar & hook black, to match the hinges... and we will replace the door handles.  I think these are the only ones in the house that aren't original (or at least very old).  We'll be on the look out at yard sales & antique shops!

Wainscoting up!

We're slightly behind schedule on the bathroom renovations... but hoping to gain some ground this week!

The good news is that the wainscoting is up!

We primed about half the boards before installing.  I fully painted the ones placed behind the radiator- they still need touch up, but I knew it was going to be difficult to paint behind the radiator once installed.

Most of the weekend was spent touching up nail holes with wood putty, and once dry, sanding... lots & lots of sanding.  At one point all four of us were in there working on it!

Last night I cleaned up all the wood chips and saw dust with the shop vac, and got the walls cleaned with the tack cloth.

If all goes well, I hope to prime & paint each night after work this week.
(A challenge since I'm usually ready to fall into bed when the kids get tucked in!)

But I think I'm motivated now that the end is in sight!

Bathroom Floor

I am so excited... the bathroom floor is in!
It makes such a huge difference in there.
I'm so glad we went with the wood- it feels warm & comfortable on the feet.

I'm not going to lie... it put the "Labor" into Labor Day, taking two of us the entire day.

If you remember, we had installed half of the floor a couple of weeks ago, but it was frustrating.  The major problem was that the floor isn't level... AT ALL (one reason that tile would have been a complete DIY disaster!).

We used shims to support the areas that dipped down.  This worked, but took us a while to perfect our technique.

Long story short... we ended up pulling it all out & starting over again.  Now we're happy with the results!

The hardest part was the final row.  We had to trim each piece to fit (and not only is the floor not level, but the walls aren't square either!) plus we needed to work around an immovable radiator and pipes.

But this part is DONE!  And although it took us a while, it cost less than $200!

And now it's all covered with cardboard... to protect it while we finish up the wainscoting.  More on that soon!

Hanging around...

...still working on the boys' bathroom- we made some great progress this weekend (just need to take pics!)
In the meantime, we've tackled another little item in the master bathroom.

After hanging the embroidery, I decided to take down an old beat-up towel bar that was here when we moved in.  -->

We still needed something to hang our wet towels from, so I went up to the attic and found a cute shelf that my mom had given me last year.

All it needed was a coat of paint.

I still need to touch up the heads of the screws with a little paint, but it's up!  -->




I love the little drawers for storing extra soap & stuff.

I'm still playing around with accessories...
