Master Bath Art Swap

I'm trying to complete some little projects to distract me from the mess progress in the other bathroom!

Earlier in the summer, I was visiting my parents & my mom gave me an embroidery that was done by my grandmother in 1975.
BEFORE

I wasn't wild about the dark brown frame, so decided to accentuate the 1970's avocado green.

AFTER

I thought it would look pretty with the contrast of the purple bathroom, so am trying it out.

I absolutely love the print that I had hanging in there,  --->
so this may be a seasonal swap.

The lady with the chairs might also look good in my bedroom.

We'll see!

Barn Gutters

Mike got another project done on the horse barn recently... putting gutters up.
I was going to include this in the last post (if you look closely you can see them!)  but since I didn't have any close-up photos, I decided to hold off so I could include better pics.

Back of barn
We were worried about the new doors rotting (like the old ones) since the rain dumps right down onto them.
So, Mike installed gutters to the front & back of the barn.

Blocks (still need to paint white!)
The tricky part was that the wall was too far back from the roof overhang, so Mike used blocks of wood to bridge the gap & make the connection between the gutter & the wall.

We've still got some odds & ends to finish up the exterior of the horse barn...

<-- Like fixing the exterior light that's hanging at a funny angle.  I'd like to paint it black too.

-putting some hardware on the sliding doors (handles to pull it open & shut).

-possibly re-hanging the sliding doors, since they're not gliding as smoothly as we'd like.

Barn Doors Painted

We took a little vacation last week, and came back to this...
AFTER

My mom had painted the barn doors while we were away!

She even painted the inside white, which really helps brighten it up in there.

I love them.
Here's how it looked right after we built the new doors:

And take a look at it from last January...  wow, what a difference!!!

Mom also touched up the white frame around the door to the tack room, the window frame in the goat barn, and cleaned all of the windows in the horse stalls.

Bathroom Update- 8/15/12

Moving right along in the bathroom...
In Progress
This past week the grouting has been completed, we've installed the shower fixtures, started installing the wainscoting and moldings, and started installing the wood floor.

Speaking of the wood floor- we totally lucked out this past weekend.  Realizing we were going to need one more box of flooring, we headed to Lowe's to order it.  We were kind of bummed since this would slow us down (last time it took about a week to come in).
However, when we got there, one box was in stock- and to top it off, it was marked down $15 because it was a return!!!  Woo-Hoo!

This is my favorite view- very white since we haven't painted the walls yet... but if you squint, it could look almost done!

Nautical Room updates

While Mike's been doing the heavy lifting in the bathroom renovations, I've been tackling little stuff around the house (while keeping the kids out of Mike's way!)

I've been looking for a ship's wheel wall hanging for my son's nautical-themed bedroom, and two weeks ago found one on Joss & Main.  It arrived this weekend, and we got it up on the wall.

The ship's wheel replaced the 3 whaling paintings that were hanging there.
I'm still figuring out where to re-hang those.

Here it is with the trunk we recently picked up.
I like the balance of  the "rough" finishes.

On the other side of the room, we've added a poster purchased during our visit to the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT this past spring.
(Great trip, by the way!  In addition to going aboard the USS Nautilus at the Submarine Museum, we visited Mystic Seaport & the Mystic Aquarium.
The boys loved it all!)

We thought the vintage-style "Join the Navy" poster went really nicely with the family Navy memorabilia we had already put up (my grandfather's uniform, photo & plaque from my dad's ship, and his line crossing certificate).

Bathroom Update- 8/7/12

After a busy weekend, here's a quick update to our "To Do List".
The grouting is complete, but we still have to do the sealer.
The room looks much like it did last week... so I didn't take new photos.

The only difference is that now it's covered in a layer of dust, since we're also finishing up sanding the spackled areas.

Other progress:
Mike set out all of the wainscoting boards in the workshop.  I hope to prime them this week.  They'll be going behind the radiator, toilet & vanity, so we're painting them ahead of installation, knowing we'll have to do touch up.

Tiling the bathroom

It finally feels like progress is being made!
Mike spent all of last weekend tiling, and here's where we ended up on Monday morning...

Much better than where we were last week!

I had originally thought the glass decorative tiles would be swapped (thicker on bottom, thinner on top) but as we staged them it seemed the thicker on top was a better balance with the green of the tub.

Here are some in-progress photos:
End of day on Saturday...

-Back wall of shower was nearly done.

Monday morning:

-All subway tile & glass decorative tile complete (still had a few edge tiles to finish up the side with the shower fixtures, but we ran out & had to pick them up on the way home from work on Monday!)
-Still had to hang soap dish & shower shelf (completed that Monday night, but I didn't take new photos yet)

This weekend we'll do the grout, then I think we'll be ready to move on to flooring!
