Master Closet- FINISHED!

As I posted about the accent wall stencil, I was looking back and realized that I hadn't put up any photos of the finished master closet!

we hung a cabinet for holding perfume & cologne behind the door.

Once inside, Mike's section has been organized.  We placed a couple of baskets up top for hats & small items.

The vintage shoe shine kit (wooden box on bottom left) was a find at an annual rummage sale!






If you were to spin around the room, you'd next come to the vanity that I fixed up a few months ago.  And then my clothes.
























When you stand over in front of the mirror, and look back... you can see the other blank wall that I had to work with in here.  (To the right is the doorway into the master bathroom).

We decided to put the hooks I found at a recent yard sale here!

I also picked up the clothes hamper that mimics the accent wall pattern.

Accent Wall in Master Closet

From the master bathroom, you look into the master closet at a blank wall.  I considered filling this with hooks and hanging my scarves & chunky necklaces there, but was worried this would look messy & cluttered after a while.

But it's the best shot I had that shows the view of the closet wall from the bathroom.

I decided to do the same stencil that I did in the little hallway off the other side of the bedroom.
Instead of metallic purple on gray, I decided on silver over the purple wall.  But I used the same method, so feel free to check that post for more details.

This project was on the back burner, so to speak... so it took months to complete.  I had the stencil drawn out before Thanksgiving.

The wall is 4 feet wide, and just under 8 feet tall.

I bought 6 little bottles of the paint, but only ended up using 3 of them!  I found success using the little paint brushes- easy to control and stay in the lines.

Over the last 4 months, I squeezed this project in between work, kids' sports practices and other house projects (usually getting just 1-2 hours in at a time).  

The pattern took three coats of the silver to look really solid.
The first coat was the most tedious, but it got easier & faster with each additional coat.

The print was a yard sale find from two years ago!  I paired it with a brass hook & hanger that my mom gave me, and a vintage pair of stockings that were my grandmothers and were packed away, new in their tissue paper.

Coat Closet

This may not be the most exciting news, but I feel like ONE (little) THING is finished!

They finished the moulding for the doorway of the new coat closet in the downstairs hallway... We jumped right in there and added a shelf and primed/painted and then Mike put in the bar.

We also picked out the door knobs- although that was a fiasco.   These are new doors, and the old-style knobs that we selected were too small for the gigantic holes that are pre-cut in these doors.  And, of course, we couldn't find any modern-style doorknobs (that would fit the pre-cut knob holes) that we liked.  

So Mike had to fill the "new" door knob holes by cutting circles out with his saw.  He then drilled a hole in the center for the hardware to go through.  He used wood glue to secure the circular wood piece in the hole.  Once dry, we could install the knobs.  We need to do this on ALL of the doors that we have chosen the glass knobs for (total of 5- master bath, master closet, laundry room, attic storage & the hall closet)

The last part needed was the circular plate (sometimes called rosette) that goes between the knob and the door, covering the patch.  

The local home improvement store didn't have enough of them, so we're on the hunt for one more!

I'm happy to be moving our winter coats down from our office, so that room can start to get straightened up!

Vanity Chair

While in the process of recovering the dining room chairs, I decided to do the vanity chairs that will go in the master bedroom & the closet.
Here's the old material that I was replacing...

It wasn't that old, but I wanted something less funky, to go with the new master bathroom/closet style.

I had picked up this material months ago since I knew the style & colors I was doing in the bedroom & bathroom.

I ran up to the attic and brought down a black/white/gray rug that I had stored away.  I like how well it goes in there (it's just the right size!) although I'm a little concerned that it is going to collect & show a lot of dog hair, so we'll see how it goes!

Master Closet

With the painting of the master closet completed...

...they  began installing the heating.

 While that was underway, we ran out and bought the shelving units.

I was planning on getting the pedestal bases and having them sit on the floor.  But then we thought that wouldn't be the best idea with the heating, so we ended up hanging them- a little more work, but now there's storage underneath as well!

Of course, our set up wasn't the same as the "kit", so we had a lot of cutting and customizing to do. Plus, there weren't studs where we needed them, so that took a bit of extra work. It took about 10 hours for assembly and hanging.

Master Bath & Closet- a little progress

We've gotten a little bit of progress going on in the master bath & closet!

First, we painted the closet...

It is a shade lighter of the purple in the bathroom, although in photos it looks almost identical.  It does look lighter in the sunlight that comes in from the closet window (we still don't have lights hooked up in there, so we'll see how it looks when those have been connected!)

The plumbers spent half a second in the master bath... mostly complaining that we had selected a pedestal sink.  They "have never, ever installed anything but vanity cabinets in a master bath" and voiced his concerns about lack of storage.

Grrrr.... I understand that more modern houses usually have big vanities with double sinks, but these guys obviously don't do much old house plumbing. There are tons of master baths with pedestal sinks on pinterest or in Old House Journal & This Old House magazines/websites!  Not to mention we have a master closet less than a foot away for storage, plus we'll have an antique dresser in there about 4 feet from the sink!

I wish they'd stop commenting on the design choices and just get it installed! (sigh!)

Master Closet Flooring

We've been going back and forth over what to use on the floor of the master closet.

We quickly ruled out wall-to-wall carpet, since we don't have it anywhere else in the house (thought it would be weird to suddenly have it here).  

Putting wood flooring might also be weird- going from wood in the bedroom, to marble in the bathroom and then back to wood.   It seemed like a lot of transitions. 

Continuing the marble from the bathroom seemed like the best option- but it was also the most expensive.  For a room that no one else will ever see, and will also be covered with shelving and likely an area rug, it seemed like a waste.

Then we found this tile and fell in love with it...

The texture reminds me of cloth- which I found very appropriate for the closet!

The dark color contrasts the white marble really nicely, and will also go with the wall color we have picked out.

We laid a few pieces down to see how we wanted the seams to go...

We decided on very tiny grout lines, and picked a dark grout to use.  The tiler is working on the master bathroom now... pics coming soon!

Rock Wall

There's a neat little plastic strip that goes on the drywall placed to right side of the rock wall.  They will spackle right up to the plastic bead, and then once it's all dry, they rip the plastic bead off and it gives a nice clean edge!

We got lucky... the drywall guy had his Saturday job cancel last weekend, so he showed up to work on our house!  YAY!

We worked on some outside projects and stayed out of his way :)

By end of the day, he had taped and spackled the whole laundry room...

There's still a small section across from that hallway door (you can see an extension cord running to it) that needs to be put in.  This is the opening we have been using to get in & out of the closet & master bath since the bedroom opening isn't broken through yet.
